Why It Matters:

Cyber Crime Markets: As per the studies in 2020 and 2023, it was found that a significant proportion of the dark web was taken up by markets that facilitate the trade of illegal goods and services, including cybercrime tools and services such as hacking, DDoS attacks, and data breaches (K. Soska and N. Christin, 2019).

Stolen Data: A study by EMC Corporation found that around 15% of the overall activity on the dark web involved the trading of stolen credentials, including credit card data and online account information (EMC Corporation, 2015. "Understanding the Darknet and Its Impact on Cybersecurity").

Malware: Cybersecurity company TrendMicro identified in a 2023 study that the dark web is a thriving marketplace for malware, with offerings ranging from simple keyloggers to sophisticated RATs (Remote Access Trojans) and ransomware.
